TILLER-HAND® – Installation Instructions
1. With the tiller exactly amidships locate the three points marked x on the drawing. The location of the cleats will determine the location of the TILLER-HAND; the objective is to maintain approximately 90 degrees between the TILLER-HAND and the two cleat points whilst locating the TILLER-HAND at least 45 cm from the rudder post. Depending on the configuration of the boat the cleats may be located horizontally on the aft deck or coaming, or vertically on the inner face of the coamings or on the sides of the cockpit foot well. The TILLER-HAND can be located underneath the tiller if preferred. 2. Fasten the TILLER-HAND to the tiller with two stainless steel screws provided. Locate the TILLER-HAND with the pulley end forward, mark the two holes and pre-drill them to avoid splitting the tiller. Fasten the TILLER-HAND to the tiller. 3. Fasten cleats (not provided) at the marked locations. Where the cleats are located horizontally and at a similar level to the tiller the control lines can be led directly to them. In this case use standard Clamcleats type CL204 or equivalent. As an alternative, camcleats can be used – the type with an integral fairlead is ideal. Where the cleats are to be mounted on a vertical surface such as the inner face of the cockpit coamings, or in the foot well, the control line must be led to each cleat via a bullseye or bridge. Alternatively, a Clamcleat of the type with an integral fairlead may be used. 4. Attach the control line to the cleats. Attach one end of the control line to one of the cleats. Holding the tiller amidships, and with the tensioning knob loose, pull the line through the TILLER-HAND and attach it at the other cleat. The line should be taut. In operation you can tighten the tensioning knob fully to lock the tiller, use various degrees of tension to stabilize the tiller whilst allowing some degree of movement, or release the tension to allow free movement of the tiller.
